We had a great 4 days in Chicago last summer. Could pair it with 3-4 days at one of the Wisconsin or Illinois interior lake towns within a 1-2 hour drive, kids that age will love a few days of swimming and ice cream. Mix of city and lake time is a nice balance.

Easy trips we've done all with our kids before age 14. I'm a big fan of easyesp if you only have a wk. we are not exactly outdoorsy either but good with beauty. Of the above Chicago would be easiest. Boston and NYC aren't bad as everyone will be out of Manhattan in Aug

Bermuda. Assuming you're in the DMV, it's an easy flight (little over an hour) and the most beautiful beaches and landscape. It's not cheap, but there are decently priced hotels. Note that tourists cant't rent cars--instead you rent mopeds or tiny rechargable cars that fit 2 people. There are also very nice taxi drivers and an efficient bus service that drops off at most beaches.
