I'm a prof. in a large department (so prett big sample). My kids are in DC private, but with the exception of one colleague (kids in religious school), children of my colleagues all are in public.

BTW, in the Norwood thread this is a spinoff from the claim of those saying Norwood is not an intellectual hotbed for the kids didn't say there weren't lots of educated parents (even .... professors!). Those defending the school made the assumption that it is about the parents.

Not true in the humanities. It is very rare to make more than 100K, unless one is very senior, in admin, or a star.

Yeah, like I said, it depends. I know a prof in the humanities making over 200k - but she is something of a star. Me, when I was in academia, I was making 46. Guess you can figure that I wasn't a star!

Prof with child in Sidwell LS. It seems that there are a number of faculty kids at Sidwell.

I'm a prof and we send our child to GDS. There are several prof families I know there, and as PP noted, one is usually not an academic (and therefore tends to earn more). My colleagues send their children to various schools, including GDS, Maret, WIS, SSAS, and publics in NoVa, elementary in upper NW DC, and high school in Montgomery County. Basically, they send their children to the highly regarded schools in the area, but if they can afford it, tend to go private (or to TJ if in NoVA).

Interesting. Are both parents in both couples profs? If so, they may be just managing it, sort of the equivalent of the two-govt-worker couples at some privates. Or maybe the teach in a field that lends itself to lots of consulting work?

I don't want to 'out' these people, but, in the case of WIS family, I'm pretty sure that one parent has written several books for the general public. They've also owned their house for a looong time, which helps. Both parents are profs.

In the case of the GDS family, they have just the one kid. So that's, what, $3K a month you have to find in your budget? I guess they do it, they certainly don't live lavishly. Both parents are profs.
