I want to indulge my childhood memories for this. So far I remember:

Homemade Rice Krispy Treats
Ice cream cups with the wooden sticks and I think a time or two the neopolitan square ice cream bars
Juice jugs - the mini ones Huggies
Pizza or Hot Dogs were the main course choices nearly always

What else did people often have at parties back in the 80s/90s?


Why do you want to pass to your kid the food you liked 30 yrs ago?
A lot of times those things don't translate.

Just have your kid pick a few of his favorite foods abd let him create his own nostalgia.

Birthdays were awesome because I got to pick out the box of cake mix at the store. I'd always pick something weird like pineapple. Plus, we'd get potato chips and real Cokes in a can.

I also appreciate a cynical push pop, but sometimes just the kids get those while I enjoy my irked coffee—just the thing on a summer afternoon.

And we all love jaded tomato sauce (Rao’s in a pinch, but ideally one that’s over $10/jar…the extra expense adds to the whole effect). 😉

Those were the BEST! I always loved when someone brought them to school for a birthday treat. At home, I’d always request a funfetti cake. I make these for my children too- except I make the cake and frosting homemade (not boxed mix with coordinating funfetti frosting in a tub)

I made those cone cupcakes for a bake sale in 1985 and made a lot of money.

A lot of good answers have been given.

I think rainbow sherbet used to be more popular.

Cake toppers were more simplistic. We used to use those cheap hard icing letters that were sold on a cardboard backing in the baking aisle.

Based on what I've read on DCUM, we played Pin the Tail on the Donkey at older ages than kids today.

I remember bowls of punch with little glass cups and fruit floating in it - that’s about it. Maybe the little ice cream cups, but they were often little Italian tortoni with ground almond on top from a local place. I guess we were fancy.
