We are getting lots of requests to get rides with friends. So far, our rule has been that she cannot ride with any friends (all of these kids have had a license for a few months, if that!). We will drive her where she wants to go. She’s embarrassed now and throwing a fit that we aren’t letting her drive with friends. We do plan to loosen up once these kids have been driving a year, and in that case, DD can drive herself places.
Are we being unreasonable? I would love to hear how others handle this. The news stories just really scare me. I won’t give in because she’s upset about it, but I would like to understand if people think we are too strict about this.
If she is throwing a fit about this - no. When she is ready to have a conversation about guidelines - yes.
Have your daughter propose the rules and discuss. Think about why you are saying yes or no.
Have a commitment to revisit the rules in 2 months and put that on the calendar.
