They do not have to release criminals when ICE asks them to keep holding them until they can pick them up, about two days. They choose to let them go, and some Democrats take active measures to help them avoid ICE.

It's usually a lot longer than that. And ICE doesn't reimburse for it. Which is why no state helps ICE out like this. It's not a sanctuary city thing.
