My kid was in Advanced Math and took the 5th grade SOL, they skipped the 6th grade SOL. I am looking at his record, he has 3rd,4th,5th,7th grade Math SOL scores. He is in 7th grade this year and we are waiting on the Algebra 1 score.


Then maybe they made a mistake. Advanced math kids in 5th take the 6th grade math sol. They actually skip the 5th grade math sol. Was your child in AAP or just local advanced math?

My school was not an AAP school. My
Kid is currently at a non-aap middle school, and was level 3 last year. What they did for us was make them take the 4th grade math test in performance matters, and if you passed that your teacher would pull you over to take the 5th grade math test. If you get at least a 17/25 on that test (which my kid did) you get into advanced math. The pass-advance on SOL and IOWA are in 6th grade, not 5th. The advance math testing starts in the fall. They don’t tell you anything.


At our ES, there was an assessment in math at the end of the school year and during the first month of school. Kids with high grades, high SOL scores, and high scores on the assessment were placed in the Advanced Math class before the school year began. Kids could be moved into that group if they did well on the assessment at the beginning of the year or if they had moved during the year. Unfortuently, I think that it is different for each MS.

Me again, I don’t think there is a way for pre algebra in 6th. If you do want to excel, take summer geometry in the summer before 8th grade.

There is one 5th grade SOL but it is adaptive. Kids getting answers correct might have seen some algebra questions on it.

Yes, it was more than that for my DS and some of his classmates. Some kids got easier questions and some got harder ones. Probably due to the adaptive nature of the SOL.

Ohh, and they sort of kind of danced around the concept of slope, but only in a direct variation/proportional reasoning lens. He found delta y over delta x on worksheets but didn’t ever use the word slope.

I don’t think they did anything beyond that. What algebra was on the exam?
