This is so true. I am amazed at the range of personalities in my DS’ K class. TT has the luxury to pick and choose.

I also know for sure that some kids did not have connections but I know why the school offered them a spot. Those kids have a range of personalities and shine in different ways. Some are quite charming and come across great communicator while some may be on the quiet side, but come across thoughtful and mature for their age. It turns out these hidden gems are not hidden but multiple TTs have spotted these kids and had offered their spots. I can see why these TTs wanted these kids. It not just being smart kids but certain personalities about them just shine through.

So do you think even if the child is at a small unconnected preschool, but has a great personality (or at least one appealing to TT), they have a decent shot?

I am not sure if you have a specific TT in mind. Also in some years, there are more siblings than the prior years which makes a difference. Also, some TTs have a large K class compared to other TTs. For example, Dalton vs SS. But overall, I do not think it hurts to apply even if unconnected.

We came from public and had no connection to school whatsoever. We were also lucky too.

Yes, Dalton’s class is big compared to SS, but they obviously try to equalize the number of girls and boys. So in a class of 90-95 at Dalton, there are still only 45-47 spots for boys and 45-47 spots for girls, which is about the same size as many SS classes.

I think some schools try not to pick from feeder schools. My child was accepted to TT from an unconnected preschool. Another classmate also came from an unconnected preschool in Brooklyn. So, it is possible.

Trinity publishes their admissions stats each year: https://www.trinityschoolnyc.org/support-trinity/annual-report

611 applications for K resulted in 70 acceptances. Assuming half go to siblings and legacies that leaves 35 acceptances for 576 unconnected applicants which is around a 6% admissions rate.

What do you think moved the needle for you coming from public?
