From DCUM, I've learned that it's an excellent group of kids with top-notch teachers who provide a demanding but supporting environment in which they are well-prepared for college and life. Although it's a small school, there are a number of good extra-curriculars and even some great sports teams. And in senior year they have the opportunity to stretch academically and pre-professionally. To be fair, it's not perfect: The building is a little crowded.

From DCUM, I've also learned it's a subpar experience in every way: The academics are both mediocre and soul-crushing test prep; the campus is a dark, crowded, depressing mess; the teachers are inexperienced and over their heads; the administration is completely unresponsive and incompetent; and the extracurriculars are virtually nonexistent, so if you want your children to do anything interesting, they have to go elsewhere. It's not a total failure: Some kids learn enough to do OK on a few AP tests.

I'm a Basis HS parent; I'd say part 1 is about 75-80 percent accurate, and part 2 maybe 20-25 percent accurate. Overall, it's been a good experience for my child, especially compared to the other non-private DC options, but it does not suit every student.

reminder: you don't actually know where these kids are going to college, if they have a parent who went to the same college, if that college still has a legacy preference and if the kid wouldn't have gotten in but for that legacy preference.

Why? We are a BASIS family and my kids have one T5 university parent, though the T5 is MIT which does not give legacies any weight.
