Friedson is expected to run for county executive. It was strategic campaign move for him to convene the town hall. Wheaton's council member Natalie Fani-Gonzalez could have hosted something similar, but she's not running for CE, so less of a need.

To be fair, she did convene a Public Safety Town Hall, where many D-CC parents and students showed up and discussed school safety issues and concerns:

I might use the phrase dumpster fire, but: massive grade inflation, unenthused and sometimes unqualified teachers, at least one lockdown per year for the 4 years my senior was there, inadequate principal responses to not just security events but antisemitic incidents (including a BCC teacher!) would give me pause if I had a younger child. And we both value the public school/heterogenous environment at BCC and could afford private if we needed to. Would not send a child to BCC if I had other options at this point. Had an older kid who graduated some years ago & their experience was significantly better (quality of instruction) -- pandemic did not do good things for MCPS.

It's not surprising that this board is read by more BCC parents than Wheaton parents.

Some principals and directors are more adept at burying the news. Also, Wheaton has a defunct PTSA. B-CC, on the other hand, has a well-organized, funded and active PTSA that makes noise and demands responsiveness from MCPS.

The difference in responses to the two schools is a combination of different levels of socioeconomics and parental engagement.

MCPS loves schools with defunct or highly compliant PTAs because they can get away with murder quietly.
