Not sure about CRS. But per law, the comptroller general (head of GAO) can only be removed by impeachment / joint resolution of Congress.

She has one year left in a 10 year term. Both Da and Rs in Congress like her. She’s done well. There is zero reason for her to leave her term early. Trump could wait and find a mediocre white MAGA next year but he wants to make a point of firing her now.

The irony is that Trump’s racist job practices are demonstrating exactly why DEI efforts are still required. Discrimination against minority populations is a fact of life in all human societies - it doesn’t simply vanish at the fifty year mark.
