We have a second sink in the island, and I use it all the time for chopping and meal prep. I had told DH we needed a disposal in that sink, he thought it was wasted $ and we didn't do it. Except that I was right, and within a few months, we added it

Blocking in the bathroom walls and stairwells for grab bars in case you ever need them - mobility issues can occur at any age. This also makes it easier to age in place.

I love being able to turn on the light at the end of the hall, walk to the other end of the hall and turn off the light.

Another must-have is a linen closet. Our house doesn’t have one and it’s obnoxious.

Drop zones by the door. We have just enough space by our back door to place a shoe bench and it’s glorious. Lots of builders cut those transitional spaces.

THIS!! I wish we had additional outlets in our first floor laundry room for this. We have only the outlets for the washer and dryer.

Surprised no one raised it yet, but soundproofing floors and some walls if you have a multi level home.

We ran RG-6 coaxial cables from basement to the likely/possible TV locations. Also ran 2 RG-6 cables between attic and basement, because we have an over-the-air TV antenna inside the attic.

Not a future proof issue but the placement of two light switches in our reno is the mildest of annoyances but one that comes into play 10+ times a day. My constant inner refrain: “Why did we put the switch for the over-island lights over there?”

This can be easily corrected with smart switches/dimmers these days. Lutron has a wireless switch you can put anywhere and will look identical to a regular hardwired switch.

Whole home electricity surge protector. I think they can be installed for around $800 (give or take). Really good given increasingly ‘smart’ …and sensitive .. home electronics, appliances and hvac systems.

Outlets in closets where you may charge things or under bathroom sinks in the vanity. Outlet/nightlights in bathrooms and stair landings. Hardwire for Ring or whatever doorbell to all external doors. Outlets high on porch ceiling for holiday garlands/decor. Charging outlets- lots if you have a mudroom or area where you gather devices. Someone said outlet by toilets for bidet, do this. I wish I had. Porch heaters or wiring for them- they take a lot of power.
