I’ve done this a couple time but it’s a solid 15 minute walk each way and I do end up pretty sweaty. Not something I can do regularly, especially because taking that long for lunch is not generally feasible.

I do bring lunch sometimes but it’s a pain. I have a teenaged son that Hoovers down all leftovers in the middle of the night. I’m not a morning person and usually rushed plus I walk/metro in so don’t really want to increase the weight of what I carry with glass microwave containers etc. some days o just bring an apple and a protein bar or whatever. Clearly it’s not an impossible burden, but getting lunch out was my splurge from my 40s (after brown bagging it most of my 20s and 30s). I’m telling DC that I have the money to spend and would gladly spend it if I had more decent options.

We used to have two Prets, a corner bakery, a Naan and Beyond, two cosis, WTF food counter, a falafal place, &pizza and some others I’m forgetting, all within 1-2 blocks. That’s all gone now.

Keep a ceramic bowl and plate at work, then you can pack in plastic and microwave in ceramic.

Op, since you don’t have nearby places to get lunch, but also don’t want to pack lunch, I’d buy a week’s worth at a time of premade lunches at Trader Joe’s and bring that in a soft sided lunch bag with an ice pack (you can get a lunch bag with a strap and wear it like a crossbody). I enjoy several of their wraps and sandwiches, the pasta salads, even the sushi. If you were willing to pay for Chopped/Sweet Green, these will seem cheap.

Eating at downtown lunch places is too much food, fattening and expensive. I love packing lunch.

This is what leftovers are for.

See if some of your coworkers want to go in on a door dash order a couple days a week, and pack lunch the others.

Packed lunch is the way to go. I haven't bought lunch near my office in 5 years (yes, was reporting to office during covid) except one time I left my lunch on the metro somehow.

It can be really easy. Hummus and veg; salad greens and protein (I grill up a bunch of chicken on Sunday and eat it through the week - DH and kids do too); sandwich; leftovers - chili and stew works great for this. If I am really out of ideas I bring hard boiled eggs or egg salad, but neither is awesome for a work lunch because they do leave a bit of a smell for 30 mins or so after you open the container!

Just pack something. If you have no desire to prep a lunch, there are plenty of options you can get at grocery stores - soup, premade salads, some frozen entrees are not too bad.

I have nearby lunch options and still bring my lunch for cost and health reasons.

My go to is a standard turkey sandwich, I make it with thin (almost shaved) sliced deli turkey and on Dave’s multigrain bread. I wrap it dry and then at lunchtime I add sliced tomato, avocado, sprouts and honey mustard (which I keep in the office fridge).

I also like to pack small, portion controlled snacks for the day like: yogurt with a small bag of Michelle’s chocolate granola; “trail mix” of almonds, craisins and sometimes I add goldfish crackers; mango with lime juice and tajin; cucumbers with lime juice and tajin; hard boiled eggs; hummus, carrots and pretzel thins; half an apple spread with almond butter, pumpkin seeds and a drizzle of honey on top.

Avocado toast is my easiest office lunch. Frozen brioche bread (throw in toaster), avocado, feta cheese and Cajun seasoning.

This and as a PP mentioned, bagged salad kits (like Taylor farms) are your friends if you don’t already have leftovers to take

Isn’t there a chopt like four blocks from there? The key is to order ahead.

My dd makes food for several days and then takes the same food for lunch.

Usual fare would be roasted veggies and toasted tofu in a herby tangy dressing, boiled egg, roasted sweet potatoes with sesame dressing, 2 tangerines, carrots and cucumbers with ranch dressing, one wedge of cheese, banana and peanut butter, container of nuts and dried fruits, one homemade falafel with fixings, various teabags, one coconut water, one spritzy water.

She takes several big and small containers in a giant but cute lunch box. My kid is a healthy snacker. She has to carry her snacks, lunch, beverages to be happy. She also does not skip meals.
