This wasn't "boys will be boys." He wasn't commenting on her body or looks. He was teasing her for being a scaredy-cat. Which she was. A dude that age comes from a time where you prod someone through gentle teasing to push through their fears and conquer them.

He's not weird. That's how old men communicate with little girls (unless they're retired teachers - then they talk about books or history or whatever) - they tease.

That's a big favor and likely a bit of a surprise if OP hadn't said she definitely would be coming. Darn we sure aren't up at dawn!
They did a big favor. Thank nicely. DD gets over it or you have to make alternative plans if you leave her alone again.
Where do you live that it was so dark?
