My company in 2024 received 1.6 million Applications and they hired 5,000 last year.
So 1.6 million people applied 5,000 jobs. Do the math.
Great companies routinely get 1,000 to 3,000 applicants per job posting.
I was in final round at Google once. I was shocked I made it past thousands of people to be only the 2nd best which ment no job.

The takeaway here is to find common ground with the decision maker interviewing you. I don’t know if OP is male or female or anything. It doesn’t matter. It’s the common ground that makers.

Most jobs posted on the internet attract hundreds of resumes. That's just reality.
Internal jobs at my F500 have hundreds of applicants whenever engineers feel motivated to apply. We have thousands of engineering employees, many young, many looking for a promotion, many open to leaving engineering for another function.
It's true that "vibes" often steer the hiring decision.
I feel the number of phone interviews is too high based on what I've seen. Also, although the pay is high for an outside the DMV job. It's hard to tell how high up this job is. It might be more normal for DMV IT. More scrutiny would be given to an upper-level hire.
It is important to recognize that OP hasn't strolled right into this job. I am angered that our economy doesn't effectively repurpose mid-career people and so many go unemployed and under-employed for so long. I would pay for myself to go to college again if I thought I had a chance of being able to start on another type of career arc without discrimination.

It’s traded racism for classism.
In 2022, the median household income for Asian Americans was about $100,000,
• while for non-Hispanic White Americans it was around $77,000.
As for black players in golf, they only started allowing play in 1975, six years after OP was born; Augusta didn’t allow black players until 1990.
Any sport where you have to fork over CASH to play every single time is clearly a sport for the privileged.

I was a college golfer many years ago, and it happened that the CIO was a big fan of golf, but he attended a rival school, think of UVA and VA Tech. Anyway, my direct manager's boss selected a younger candidate, but he was overruled by the CIO. I am extremely grateful to be working again at my age.
I know it is a very tough market out there for tech/IT but little I know that over 2500 resumes for one position. It makes me appreciate the opportunity that is given to me even more. Best of luck to everyone out there looking for jobs.
don't worry, your gov with Democrats leading the charge are making sure we import a million more H1Bs for the "skills" shortage, that has lasted over 35 years.
I expect this Congress to introduce and pass a bill to limit H-1B visas to a small number of critical-need talents. If you do not act, the program will continue to drive Americans out of these fields.
