I think if you look into salmon farming practices, you’ll realize this is a normal reaction.

I talked to the fishmonger at my Whole Foods about this issue, and he said it relates the the shrimp that the farmed salmon are fed. It also is why farm raised salmon now has an extra fatty strip and it didn’t just a few years ago.

Read about additives in fish and poultry feed that are used to make the flesh more pink like wild caught salmon and trout, or the yolks darker like chickens that are free ranged on bugs and grass.

RFK might have the FDA look into eliminating these, but of course people will complain "Oh my salmon and trout looks gray instead of a pretty orange pink!"

Yep, eating something with a heartbeat comes with a side of callous cruelty, agreed.

12,000 years ago we’d chase an elk to the point of exhaustion and kill it slowly with a dull pointy rock.

We’re talking about something different, whether its our age or recent processing changes there seems to be some of us who became no longer ok with farm raised salmon in a very short period of time.

OP:
We have a saltwater fish tank and about two years ago I chopped up a little bit of some shrimp we bought from Costco and fed it to the tank, within three days everything was dead, hermit crabs walked around shaking until they expired, the fin fish that ate it also died, that was the last time we got shrimp from Costco or any farm raised shrimp.

The salmon I tend to buy is the one that comes in that clear blister package, as I think about them they don’t smell like fish at all when you open them, so maybe the antiseptic or fish Febreze they use is what’s generating the feelings that I should be spitting this out.
It’s interesting to see how many people are newly repulsed by salmon, maybe there’s something relatively new in processing methods?

The same happened to me and I used to love salmon. I’m late thirties. Meat in general is grossing me out.

Same. I'm not sure it's age or I just OD'd on it at some point after years of eating it from childhood on but poached/grilled is not disgusting to me and I'm nit generally a picky eater.

Over the past few months if I take more than two or three bites I’m just done, no one else in the family has mentioned any changes, preparation has been the same but to me now it just tastes like this pile of oily mush.

Did the salmon change or did I? Has anyone had something like this happen?

They might be sourcing it from a different place, or a change in the methods used to raise them. They might be adding new hormones, vaccines, or antibiotics to the fish altering their flesh and taste.

So many variables.
