I don't think so.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins has pledged to bail out farmers hurt by tariffs and “make them whole” again, just as they were bailed out by his tariffs in 2018.

“Rollins said she couldn't specify how much money the USDA might need to send to "make farmers whole." But "if necessary, we are ensuring that we are set up, we have the infrastructure ready" to send assistance to farmers, she said, adding that relief will depend "on what the president announces."

There will be carve-outs for all the key MAGA constituencies.

From what pot of money? And who is left to administer these hypothetical payments?

From the deficit and adding to the debt. Or are you one of those naive people who believe Trump intends to lower the debt and to put the US to the path of fiscal responsibility? Farmers are a strategically important constituency in the Midwest and even areas or blue states like California, Trump will shower them with money and they will keep voting GOP. Payments will be administered by the contractors USDA will hire at double the cost to the government and to the profit of some MarALago-going billionaire Trump supporter. Again zero care where the money comes from, it will come from the Already unsustainable deficit the US has. Trump wants to now fire Powell to have some yes man lower interest rate while inflation is getting higher again. We are going to end up like Argentina but the farmers will be paid

Sigh. It's only socialism when the money goes to people Trump doesn't like.

Well, that's not a very informed position.

Super interesting discussion with Trump voters in the NYTs a couple days ago. Do they think tariffs work? They were split, but willing to give them a chance. Are they willing to endure short term pain while tarriffs work? Yes, they say they are. When asked to define the “short term pain,” they would endure, most landed in the range of 2-3 months. Which is absolutely long enough to change supply chains and build factories and train works /s. (To produce goods that will be more expensive. By that metric, Trump has until about mid to late summer to reinvent American manufacturing. Good luck with that. Especially since no one is investing in factories when Tru ps tariff policy is so erratic. They’ll just wait him out.

By Christmas, when their kids missed summer vacation (gas proaces) and cheap plastic cr@p has tripled in prince and they can’t afford Christmas dinner, they will be well past “short term pain” and have learned a hard lesson about tarriffs. Until then, logic and “it takes 5-10 tears to bring a factory (that will be automated and employ white collar folks to maintain the robots, but not you)” isn’t going anywhere with the cult. It will take hunger and kids without Christmas presents.

I agree with this PP. There is the Trump cult, those are the rallies attendees, red hat wearers who voted for hate and racism. But prob at least half of Trump voters voted almost solely on the assumption that Trump = more $$$ for them through tax cuts, lower prices, higher markets, more jobs, etc. They are saying they can endure "short term pain" because no one likes to admit they were wrong and Trump voters also like to act tough. But after 2-3 months, they will be gone. If you ask Chinese citizens who support their government (many don't) how long they could endure a trade war, they would say years, not less than a quarter.

This is the type of privilege that distorts the perceptions of upper-middle class people when they try and tell lower-middle class people how they should think. Laborers don't go on big summer vacations.

I have a few farmers in my extended family and they do well enough to take a vacation. At least they used to.

That’s the point. They don’t fly to Europe. They gas up the car and go camping in a national park (no rangers) or to visit Nana (high gas prices) or to rent a shack at a third rate beach (high food prices, high entertainment prices and high gas prices). And this summer, that might not happen. Costs are up. Consumer confidence is down. And people aren’t spending because they are afraid of inflation and job loss. So, the camping trip or beach shack won’t happen. Neither will the Barbie’s at Christmas. At that point, they are well past patience with “short term pain”. Especially if they are out of work and food bank money is gone, and Medicaid is gone, but billionaires got their tax cut.

I agree with a lot of what everyone has said, except gas prices will drop. Gas prices usually drop during a recession. They went from mid $4 to $1.60 or so during the 2008 recession. People can save money on gas but still not afford to go on vacation.

Trump will brag about low gas prices, but it will be in the setting of a recession

Lots of people drive all over for vacation, some of these are short drives and some are long.

Clueless much? UMC fly to their vacations. The rest drive for a week or so off (gas prices).

My cousin is going out of business because of the tariffs.

She had a small business she started out of her garage in 2022. It quickly boomed and she outgrew her space. She rented a warehouse and has been based out of there for a few years now. Doing great sales wise.

Right now, her operations are on pause, but she's told us in the family that unless there's a total tariff reversal, she'll be permanently closing.

Her tariff bill increased from around $10k to almost $200k.

-So that'll be her and her partner out of jobs.
-The warehouse landlord out a tenant because their 3-year lease is up in July and she's given notice that she can't renew. This location was built in late 2019 and sat empty until she came long. The other units in the park are also empty.
-Staff will be out of jobs.

MAKING AMERICA GREAT!
