What would be the reason? Aren’t these jobs essential like USAID?
Because most Americans do not care. They don’t see the benefits of government in general and USAID in particular. The government is not popular with Americans. They don’t respect government employees. It won’t be a popular campaign item to grow the government or hire employees back. I say this as a government employee. I love what I do but I fully understand that the American public want me gone, if not dead.
I actually think the virulent anti-govt crowd is a pretty small group. They’re loud but not as big and mighty as they think. DOGE has been pretty unpopular and is shaping up to be an abject failure. Unfortunately it’s a few nutjobs on Twitter who have been running policy/DOGE cuts but it’s not actually a popular platform. Yes, many Americans didn’t care enough to vote or do any research but the more they hear about these cuts, the more they see of Elon, the more they dislike them. That’s not to say that they haven’t done tremendous damage to this country that will probably take decades to undo but it’s really more Americans’ apathy and ignorance than anything else.
At least one agency (fda) is just hiring contractors to do the work after they fired too many people. There will be rehiring in the future but probably not in the way that things are now. Which again, will be worse— contractors cost the govt far, far more than FTEs.
