Murderbot. It is by far the most relatable depiction of social anxiety I've read.

I read this relatively recently but think about this character all the time

Cal Hooper + a few other chracters from the newer series by Tana French (The Searcher, The Hunter). I am really cautious about even slightly spoiling so I don't want to specifically name the other characters.

Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver

Yes! I got the book at the library because I've always wondered what happened to Lee. And I was not disappointed!

That’s interesting! I had the opposite reaction. I just could feel her emotions as deeply this time. The story just felt ordinary.

I don't disagree with you, but that seemed reasonable and right to me since we're now seeing Lee as an adult. At the same time, her observations about her classmates were so keenly observed and so slyly funny -- she's still the same Lee, but more comfortable with herself and more willing to go after what she wants. That felt like a happy ending to me.

The characters in Han Kang’s The Vegetarian.

I will also never look at trees the same way after reading this book (read it twice).
