Bad weather and not perceived to be a fun school. But our private still sends a few quirky kids there each year who missed out on the T30 because it’s a very solid school.

My kid just visited and was impressed by the campus, museums, food etc. Downtown Cleveland could be a bit more lively, but was much better than expected.

I went to Case and it's a very STEM (specifically engineering) heavy school.

Private high schools don't send many kids to study engineering (at any college) because of the salaries. My kids attend a well-regarded private and the wealthy by-in-large have kids who go into finance or law. Engineering is viewed as a stable but middle to upper middle class career. Sure, some engineers combine their scientific knowledge with business (or law) and make a ton of money but most do not.

It's been interesting to observe all of this as someone who did not grow up with any sort of money.

Shhh. Don’t tell the private school kids about Case.

The CS kid seem to think it's a decent school.

I think Cleveland is the drawback. Most DC area kids do not want to be in Cleveland.

This 1000%. Visit Rochester, and many prefer that (not Boston or NY but much "better than Cleveland"

Rochester is similar to Case Western, strong premed, freezing winter. But Rochester is quite popular in our private. Just wondering why.

Visit both and you might form better opinions.

FOr us: Case was a bit more "nerdy/geeky". DD is engineering, but not a "nerd" at all (didn't do robotics or STEm focused ECs). Rochester has a much stronger non-STEM programs (and has for decades) so it brings a better balance of students, IMO. We visited twice, back to back for both schools. And the Nerdy/Geeky vibe was real.
Also, my kid liked Rochester much better than Cleveland. Case campus is urban, right in middle of stuff. UR is very near things, but the campus is basically self contained by the river, hospital on one side and cemetery on the other. So it has more of a traditional campus feel.

My parents currently live in Cleveland. (I did not grow up there.) My grandpa was a prominent scientist who graduated from Case.

You do get a good education. The campus area is currently not as nice as other schools that I like better. However, I feel that way about some other schools that are very popular. It is a springboard for medical school and other STEM jobs. It's worth checking out.

Private school people like private stuff. It makes them feel special. That always explains a lot. People don't move to Cleveland (or the rest of the Rust Belt) to feel elite. They do it because it's practical and if you're at the top end of the income scale and like snow you can have a very nice life. I live in the Rust Belt now. CWRU is one alternative to Michigan STEM.

Cleveland is a great city and Case is in a terrific neighborhood. Museums, parks, those cultural gardens.

Oh Lord, this is silly. Case Western is a well known, excellent school.

I know for some students, Case doesn't make the list because (although it is an excellent school), it doesn't have the traditional upbeat peppy sportsy vibe of many colleges. My kid thought it didn't seem fun. A little nerdy. I think that'll be a great fit for my other kid, but I think it doesn't make some lists because of the STEM-y culture (which has its upsides and downsides!).

Cleveland is better than just OK. It’s underrated. Pro sports, great symphony, ethnic restaurants, great hospitals, great museums, and lower cost of living.
