I always waited for the eye contact and a smile to get my invitation. I do approach women I find attractive and seemingly in a mood to be approached. Gen X so take that into account, I think my generation of men are generally unafraid to approach and of rejection.

I almost never approach women. I can't think of anything to say that doesn't sound dumb. When I've done it, I've seen something intelligent in their eyes. We bond nonverbally before we even talk. Unfortunately that almost never happens.
I know many people miss the good old days when people met in person, but online dating has worked better for me. Over the years I found I could write in a conversational way that has appealed to a few women with shared interests. I just don't have the kind of game that works at bars, supermarkets, museums, pickleball courts, or other places where people meet naturally.
Physical attraction definitely matters but it's not enough for me.
I know many people miss the good old days when people met in person, but online dating has worked better for me. Over the years I found I could write in a conversational way that has appealed to a few women with shared interests. I just don't have the kind of game that works at bars, supermarkets, museums, pickleball courts, or other places where people meet naturally.
