We love Maine but have only been in August (we’ve typically gone to mid coast areas). My kids love paddle boarding and kayaking, and as a family we love hiking and biking, and great fresh seafood. I love Maine weather in August, especially since it is so hot in DC then.
Maybe I’ll look into the Smoky Mountains (assuming there are nearby lakes). Any suggestions for other Maine type vacation spots but with warmer weather in June?
Usually the first kayak shops open around memorial day weekend. With the right clothes (and shops often have them to lend you for the trip), you can have a blast even on a chillier day. Long pond is also fairly sheltered and less windy most days.
I love late May/early June in Maine. So much quieter, and by June, most things are open. My youngest just turned 2 and we haven’t braved the trip up with two kids yet. But for fifteen years, including 2 with our older kid, we went late May/early June every year for a week+.
Cottages are cheaper to rent pre fourth of July, too. Having a full house with multiple bathrooms for post hike/kayak hot showers or baths is lovely.
Some of the carriage roads may still be under repair that time of year, but with so many miles of trails I’m sure you could find plenty to do.
Acadia is such a gem! This post is making me wanna go back this summer, but I’m just not ready to take two kids yet— hopefully next summer my youngest will have dropped her naps and be a more flexible traveler.
This is my fave place to stay-

Staying in Stonington/taking the shuttle over to Isle Au Haute is also a good trip.
