There's a lot of Type A people in DC who moved here from somewhere else, where the public schools were good, and they did very well in those schools. Then, they move to DC and it turns out that good public schools here are rare, and the expectations of students here are generally very low, and the system is incredibly resistant to change (thanks in no small measure to the teachers union). I think that's where a lot of the friction comes from. They want their kids to get the same kind of education that they got and that's a lot harder to find in DC.

This sounds like a “you” problem.

I assume you're mostly dealing with white parents in Ward 3. That explains probably 75 percent of it.

Parents here deal with the reality that for at least 15 years, the effort to close the achievement gap has been openly and blatantly aimed at dragging the top students down. That will turn anyone into a maniac.

A system dedicated to mediocrity, weak leadership, capricious decision-making, underfunding of core elements and over-emphasis at times on pointless initiatives.

No wonder parents are frustrated.

There were few pointers that invalidated the OP- in addition to what you said about their writing as an educator, it was their generalizations and blanket statement, and then they doubled down in their response with their “wtf is wrong with everyone.”, which validated all the above. It’s a combination of the Type A nature that tends to gravitate to DC and the rampant anxiety people have with their imposter syndrome.

My mom was a Catholic grade school principal in Louisiana in the 1990s. Parents were pretty dreadful then/there too.

And no, I do not run screaming at my child’s school to terminate teachers because they looked at me wrong or my kid took scissors and cut a tiny slit in their shirt.

The point is you make a sweeping generalization that includes you yet you don’t own it. And a kid once sliced my jacket right up the back with scissors while I was volunteering in a classroom and the teacher didn’t even know till the following week when the kid told her what happened. Most parents are like you and me. You just see the worst ones and want to say all are like the worst. Why?

I know the moms for liberty types are a different kind of bad but I’ll throw them in the ring. Would they beat an entitled DC parent?

I think this may be true. The most high strung parents all pulled their kids from DCPS and moved to the suburbs. So I can only imagine that the suburban parents are worse overall.

I grew up in an insular, homogeneous, UMC suburban community, and the parents sucked. All of the worst things you see in the worst parents in DC—entitled, materialistic, competitive—without any of the diversity or culture. Just narrow, self-satisfied, boring snobs.

DC has such a wide range of people, from folks born and raised here to people from all over the country and world. There are certainly subsets of people who suck, but I don’t find it to be by any means universal, simply because of the heterogeneity.
