Seems reasonable to me…

But if it is something I find unnecessary (whether prom, super expensive clothing item or activity or whatever), I make my kid cover the difference from their own $. You could always say “I will contribute $30 but you will have to make up the difference- that is very expensive” (or similar)

To be clear, I don't know if that is reasonable to expect a kid to spend, but the cost for what they have picked seems reasonable.
