CalTrain commuter rail is reliable and connects with BART at Millbrae. So it might be practical to rent near CalTrain farther south and commute by CalTrain+BART.

Stanford and Santa Clara University are both right on Caltrain stations. They may rent dorm space to interns in the summer.
