I have a kid at VT who loves it. One thing I notice about VT is that the kids are super smart, but down to earth. There is also the Corps of Cadets on campus which i think raises the self discipline a notch for everyone else. I mean, if you go to a 100-level class and there are other students your age in military dress who are saying "yes, sir" and "no, ma'am" to the professors and doing very well in class, I think it raises the game for the other students, as well. My student was already a disciplined student, but is even more so now, but is still down to earth and fun. That's a VT student. Super smart, but down to earth.

DP. Wisconsin is not "overall a better university." How silly. And you have no idea what "most" would prefer. My kid had this choice, along with several other schools and chose VT. Very happy there.

Madison is a much better location for off-campus stuff than Blacksburg, but not worth OOS tuition unless kid really wants what city offers.

UW is building a new engineering center that won't be done for a couple years. You might want to check into what impacts that may have.

Yes, and rankings really do not mean very much in engineering. Schools like ODU are rigorous and follow roughly the same curriculum. Their graduates also have similar skills as grads from other engineering schools who took equivalent electives.
