I have always been concerned about traveling to these countries. Now I think I will pass.

These three women died of carbon monoxide poisoning in Belize.

This is exactly what I think happened- drug overdose. Pills.

Maybe the restaurant wanted to steal from them and incapacitate them with drugs.

For the life of me I don't get the appeal. Do people just get off on feeling like they're the king of a third world plantation with desperate servants at their beck and call?

They want to go zip lining in the jungle.

I would not generally lump Costa Rica in with those other countries. They don’t have the same issues.

It’s still considered Central America.

NP - you are incredibly uneducated. Yes, Costa Rica is *in* Central America, which is a geographic region which tells you nothing about the area other than where it is. But as the PP said, it doesn't have the same issues as many other countries - you can drink the water from the tap, for example.

Also, your risk assessment stinks.

It’s near third world countries and in an unsafe part of the world. Plus you can get Zika from mosquitoes there. No thank you!

Plus botulism has very specific symptoms including paralysis. The entire family would have been sicker. There are tons of different food pathogens, though, and some of them can cause death.
+1 to staying in country when you travel.

With the Musk/Trump cuts to the food safety programs here in USA, you'll get the food poisoning experience right here in the USA.

Does Costa Rica really merit the same caution as the other two?

The food poisoning didn’t kill him. Whatever they used to treat him did.

I had this happen to me once. Quite scary! I had to pull off the freeway to find the closest drugstore and gulped down some anti-histamines.
