NP - you are incredibly uneducated. Yes, Costa Rica is *in* Central America, which is a geographic region which tells you nothing about the area other than where it is. But as the PP said, it doesn't have the same issues as many other countries - you can drink the water from the tap, for example.

Plus botulism has very specific symptoms including paralysis. The entire family would have been sicker. There are tons of different food pathogens, though, and some of them can cause death.
