Pitt doesn't have the glamor of some of these small LAC these kids seems to want, but I'd visit. It's prettier than you might imagine

For a Philosophy major, Pitt is what you want. One of the top Philosophy programs in the country, and with an early rolling admission, he can have an acceptance in hand by October, as others have noted.

unweighted GPA. school doesnt. maybe around top 30%?
no 4.0s in graduating class, if that gives you an idea. very rigorous school. freshman year GPA was 3.6

What school? My DC goes to a top private in NYC and we were told 60%+ for safeties.
It’s possible the advice is individualized.
Then PP should indicate that. Otherwise it's misleading.

They're not going to yield protect a 3.7, even from a grade deflating private.

+1. Very different advice for our DD and DS. Also has changed a lot since first DC was applying (2021-2). She was told reach was under 10%, target was under 25%. Now they say everything under 25% is a reach for everyone.

I’m glad that worked out, but I don’t think it’s a typical approach.
