We left during Covid. I know of 4 other families who did the same or soon after.

They're just not talking about it with you yet.

I know a lot of people putting plans into motion to leave, but it's an awkward conversation to have with people before you have the visa, passport, job, plan for your house, etc. in place.

Even if it's the right decision for your family, other people have a vested interest in telling you that you are crazy to leave DC (wanting you to stay and not leave them), so why share widely until it's done.

We’re probably leaving this summer to move our family to Europe. The plan is to rent out our house for a couple years and then figure things out.

We aren’t feds and we’re currently employed, but I see the writing on the wall. I don’t imagine there is a good future for my kids in the USA, especially DC at this time. I recognize how privileged we are to be able to do this, and honestly I don’t want to move my family overseas but I think it’s for the best.

This is my boycott of the US. I’m absolutely disgusted by what’s happening and I don’t want my tax dollars to support it.

I know only two kinds of people: those who’ve fled DC and those who desperately want to but haven’t found a way. Yet.

DC has always been a very transient place to live. Personal anecdotes aside, I think it's really hard to separate the Trump effect from the existing nature of the place. Right now it feels like people are fleeing b/c people are talking about it but looking back on it historically there may be no more than a demographic blip.

I knew several people who left the DC area when there were more liberal remote work policies, but don’t know anyone leaving right now. This might very well change if/when more layoffs happen, but haven’t seen it yet.

No but I can name 2 people who are fleecing DC

+1. I know a young single person who moved back in with their parents after losing their job. I don’t know of any midlife people with families moving though.

People moved out when crime peaked.

People who left left after '16. And after shutdown of in-person schools and work. Some have returned to DC others left for good.

If you don't have a job and rent then its wiser to move to a low cost of living area. If you own then its not so easy to get up and leave. One would try to find a job here, even if its not something they want.

What are people thinking to do with their homes? Sell, rent out if they own the place? What is Europe like? More of this same as U.S. of A?

Yes, including us.

No, I don’t know anyone. This is just one of the things making this so terrible. People own homes, have kids in schools, and are part of communities. Most can’t just pick up and leave all that without a lot of thought and planning.
