Did not move in Virginia but moved house in 2019 within an EC state. Moved from a two bedroom townhome to a 3 bedroom ranch style home 1 mile apart and it cost us almost $5k.
We packed everything and brought expensive items (jewelry, heirloom china, paperwork, passports SSNs etc, certain art) on our own. It took all day and I think they sent over 4 people. We also tipped them each and had coffee and pastries / bagels when they arrived, water, paid for lunch also. But anything of value you bring over yourself!

My parents moved to a different country every 4-5 years, and our boxed move was paid for by my father's work, but not the actual putting into boxes, or getting stuff out of the boxes. My mother was disabled but still able to help. We all pitched in.
As an adult, I moved my family within Maryland and we did everything ourselves (with a toddler and preschooler in tow!). I do NOT recommend that, but I do encourage you, if you can, to pack things yourself - you'll be more careful than the movers, and you'll remember where everything is and pack in a way that makes sense for you. I also second PP's suggestion to review movers closely and supervise them.
Because I can afford it and don’t want to do it. I will never pack myself again after having professional packers.
