Another one of my kids was WL with a SAT of 1550 4.6 GPA and 12 APs and massive leadership/ECs.

Both kids got into FAR higher ranked schools for their majors so VT is a mystery to us as to what they want.

I think admissions varies widely by major. Pick something obscure if you really want to go there.

This sounds likes yield protection.

same this year for my DD except slightly higher STATS 1410 and 4.29W. APs and HN each year. Internship (2 summers), good ECs, varsity sport, 100+ volunteer hours, a job, specific essays strong La di da…was really disappointed

Yikes! Did she get off the waitlist?
waitlist is basically a rejection. I think last year there were a grand total of 7 who got off waitlist.

My kid is at VaTech in Engineering, 2nd year. The impression she has is that VaTech Engineering plans on weeding out a lot of kids from Engineering in the first year. She went to apply for internship meetings at career fair and many companies tell students they don’t accept applications until they have passed the first year as an Engineering major at VaTech.
