Cambridge, JP, or East Boston. East Boston is a majority latino community and much less gentrified/ doesn't have the fancy vibes, so depends what exactly you're looking for.

We currently live in Mt Pleasant, walk our kids to school, know all of our neighbors, go to the farmers market every week, hike in RCP on the weekends, etc, etc. Is there any Mt Pleasant equivalent around Boston? Ideal would be an extremely walkable and diverse neighborhood that is less than 30 minutes to downtown Boston, with a bilingual public elementary school and a good middle school. I have never lived in Boston, although we have extended family in Western MA that we have visited a lot. I just don’t know enough about the area to know where to start to look. Ideally not looking to spend more than NW DC prices for rentals, although I recognize cost of living might be higher there.

Jamaica Plain might be your best bet. Or Brookline (with better schools). Id say the South End but the public schools in the city dont guarantee your neighborhood school.

I agree with all that is said here. I would add, if you need someplace cheaper--Waltham center might work.

I would say look at Arlington or Waltham, unless close proximity to city is very important.

Brookline is great. And they have some great bagels.

JP, or, if you can afford it Brookline or Cambridge.

Somerville has a Mount Pleasant or Takoma Park feel. Lots of tenure-track but not full professors.

Definitely Jamaica Plain! Diverse and walkable with lots of great amenities, including the Harvard arboretum and the original JP Licks. There are a ton of young families in the area. I think there is even a farmer's market on weekends near Centre St.

Brookline is terrific, but nothing like Mt Pleasant. I agree with the Jamaica Plain and Cambridge recs, also Somerville.
