What about the Brandywine Valley?

Lots of cute towns, Dupont mansions/gardens including Longwood which appeals to many ages (they have tree houses), glass blowing. Wyeth stuff: https://www.brandywine.org/museum/historic-artists-studios/nc-wyeth-house-studio

I'm not as familiar with hikes and other outdoorsy activities, but I know there are some.

Could Rehoboth Beach work? Houses available for rent, boardwalk, family and LGBT friendly, restaurants, the ocean, bike and walking trails Not a ton of art/culture, but the beach is lovely and cape Henlopen park is great too.

OP here, and, yes, thank you. I've just been ignoring the suggestions. Or rather, banking the suggestions for a future vacation. But they're not right distance-wise within 3 hours of NYC and 6 hours of NOVA, and unfortunately, those are pretty hard parameters for this trip.

That’s why I suggested Stockbridge and not, say, Williamstown.

Should be no problem getting to Stockbridge in 3 hours from NYC regardless of when you leave.

Thanks. It needs to be 3 hours from NYC AND 6 hours from Northern Virginia. Stockbridge MA is 8 hours from NOVA, unfortunately.

Finger Lakes area. Get a house in Othaca or on the water.

Lots of hiking, boating, outdoor activities. Wineries. Depending on time of year if the kids would find it fun the Watkins Glen race track is there. Corning Glass museum.

Agree about the Cape. Lake George is too far too. I think OP is limited to locations in southeastern NY, PA, and NJ.

Solidly agree. Add in the 6 hours from Fairfax and they're all out. Cape Cod maybe 6 hours from NYC but not VA.

Ocean Grove, NJ also very cute. Historic Victorian coastal town. Is quirky but fun and can take train in to NYC for the day. Next town over Asbury Park has music and an awesome pinball museum.

Lake Placid area in Adirondacks also has a lot to do.

+1 I suggested Bolton's Landing previously but this is the better choice!
