We lived in an area where quite a few kids did high level non-school sports or time/travel activities. The schools were good about adjusting class schedules and waiving non-academic requirements.

My youngest lucked into a stage acting role each October - December of middle school. There were regular mid-week matinees and the school was great about scheduling so his fall term academic classes were all in the morning. I’m sure the kids who were figure skating from 7-10am had the reverse set up.

Kids get used to eating in the car. A story; a friend of my daughter’s hopped in dad’s car after soccer practice one evening. Parents were having a quick post-practice meeting on an upcoming tournament. Daughter ate her sub sandwich dinner in the backseat while waiting. Except, dad hadn’t gotten anything for her. That sandwich was likely a week or so old. She was out of school for two or three days recovering.

Just to have a national ranking? lol

This is pretty common in tennis allowing the school schedule to wrap around daily blocks of tennis training.

My kid's very small high school was extremely flexible with her schedule so that she could train her sport during the school day. She's now a D1 athlete in college and recently reflected her gratitude for the school administrators, teachers who went out of their way to make she she could train. She also sees now that this outside of school time severely limited her personal relationships with her classmates - as friendships, especially in high school are based on proximity and togetherness. She had a rather lonely social life in high school which made some of the hallmark events like dances, prom, senior trips, etc. rather heartbreaking.
