I sold cars to a private parties before. I was young and did not think about safety. Everything worked out well, but I would not do it today simply because my risk tolerance is inversely proportional to age and the number of children

Everyone wants to test drive it so you could go with them on a test drive. I sold my wife's car and went on a test drive with four men. After the test drive they bought it.
If you don't want to go with the person on a test drive then sell to carmax and assume any loss.
I just traded my car in on a new one and didn't want to have to deal with people. I assumed a loss and moved on.

PP reminds me of when selling your car privately you should expect the buyer to get an independent pre-purchase inspection. This usually means taking it to a shop that you also feel comfortable with.
When you finalize purchase, you should supply a Bill of Sale form that has all the details of your transaction along with the words like “buyer is purchasing car in as-iscondition”. This form/template can be found on web.

Get a quote from AutoNation, too. They offered me a higher price than did CarMax and Carvana.
Selling to a commercial buyer like one of those is relatively hassle-free, which made the undoubtedly lower price worth it to me.
