55 is way too young for these places. My aunt moved into one. We swear it made her seem way older after only living in her condo for 2 years. It was sad. An older gentleman 18+ years convinced her to marry him and it was downhill after that.

I always thought "55+" was to make the 70+ people actually moving to those places feel less bad about them being for old people.

Leisure World in Silver Spring, MD is 55+ independent living, so no communal meals (though there are restaurants there if you choose to go). It has over 8000 people so I imagine quite a few of them are introverts. But I do think part of the appeal of moving there is all the clubs, activities, and amenities.

Once you break a hip and need 24 hour care or god forbid memory care it's down right scary. They hide you away. The staff at the top make a lot of money but they never see what happens to the actual patients.

The real caregivers are burned out. Be forewarned.

^We saw similar. Very superficial place and staff. Nursing staff & CNAs are good but NP, doctors, and administrators are not.

We are also looking for places like that hopefully in communities that are not brand new and with larger lots, but we have not been able to find them in the DMV. They do exist in other areas because we visited them. So what we decided to do is to wait a few more years until we are fully retired in mid 60s and move then.

I know many people who are in their mid-fifties who are not even close to being ready to relocate to a Senior Citizen community.

Most people in this age range still actively work, drive + socialize.
And can still cook, clean, shop and take vacations too!

I'm not in DC area. In this area there are 55+ neighborhoods of mostly single story SFHs with some amenities like lawn care included in the HOA but they don't have dining, like a continuing care/progressive care facility might have. So I think there's a range of options to consider, and in that kind of neighborhood I would think an introvert could keep to themselves as much as desired.

The hoas are usually super expensive at those places and they're meant for people to be social. Some things to consider.

My parent in their 70s just had a really positive experience at the GH Bailey's Crossroads rehab. Parent lives independently currently in a condo but after that experience they are considering GH for independent living longer-term as they age. Not sure I'd move in at 55, but I think it could be a good place to be when older. And with enough independence for an introvert. I'm not attached or affiliated with GH but wanted to plug we had a great experience, even in the rehab section.
