Prom is one of the very few times in one's life one might dress up, similar to one's wedding. I don't see how it's indicative of materialism at all on its own. My dd is not wasteful, prefers Goodwill and resale like many girls these days, but prom dresses are very tricky to find used because of fit.
A prom is not on the same level as a wedding, and most people dress up more than just at prom and their wedding. Buying anything to use only once is materialistic.
