I agree with most of this — it really should not be only Jews' responsibility to speak out against this, and our synagogues generally don't make public statements on political matters of any kind (though many rabbis do, and have). The alleged antisemitism as the ostensible reason for these deportations is also an example of people using Jews for political purposes.

I will say, though, I don't agree with deporting the Brown professor, even if she did attend Nasrallah's funeral.


You are correct that it is not solely the responsibility of Jews or Jewish religious institutions to speak out, but this is an insanely dangerous moment for America and for Jewish Americans. Flagrant violations of the US Constitution are being justified as happening for the benefit of Jewish Americans. This Tweet is the most obvious iteration, but it's also clear in the way that DEI processes are being dismantled with a specific carve-out for DEI programs for Jewish folks.

Now, we all understand that Jews are being used as pawns in an immigration crackdown Trump was going to do anyway, but I'm honestly afraid of the backlash when the bill comes due on all of this.

Really? You don't support the 1st Amendment? You support anyone being picked up because Trump's administration doesn't like what they say? That is the position of the DOJ directly right now in a court of law under oath hand on bible. Which by the way is 100% unconstitutional. I may not like what this person says or maybe I do but I dam well as an American stand with the Constitution and the 1st Amendment and not the Trump Administration's demanteling of the US and it's values and laws.

Another person here legally has been taken by ICE in the name of antisemitism. He appahas done nothing more than marry someone who is Palestinian American who has a father who was in Hamas long ago (and has disavowed 10/7). The detained Georgetown postdoc hasn’t done anything political.

Because arresting a deporting someone who was here legally and who has neither been charged with nor convicted of a crime is a dangerous and slippery slope. It reminds me of the 1930s in Europe… and that should matter to Jews a lot.


+1. It’s not about whether this other person would be looking out for my rights. We’ve already gone through the experience of no one looking out for our rights, and know what that leads to. That’s why I will always be the first to look out for other people’s rights. I know what happens no one does that.

Many Jews, including my rabbi, have spoken out against this arrest. And I’m glad they have. This case involving speech many people find repugnant or even offensive is EXACTLY what free speech is about.

As a Jew I will never forgive or forget anyone who calls themselves a Jew and voted for Trump.
