You can’t have the death penalty when the legal system is as flawed as it is. I don’t think a whole lot of rich people get executed. Outcomes are heavily influenced by how much money you have (e.g. OJ), so the system obviously doesn’t work very well.

Many innocent people have spent decades in jail for something they didn’t do, usually due to incompetent cops, lawyers, prosecutors and judges. I don’t doubt many innocent people have been executed too.

I’m completely fine with life sentences. I’m anti-death penalty and solitary confinement.

DP, but some of us don’t support the death penalty because we’ve demonstrably gotten it wrong sometimes.

As long as our justice system is flawed, which it always will be because human beings are involved, I’d prefer to stick with reversible punishments.

I haven’t researched it, but my understanding is that - after one considers the cost of appeals and other costs - on average it’s less expensive to keep someone in prison for life than to execute them.

Idaho just passed a law that allows firing squad. The state allows the death penalty in some homicide cases.

Idaho also introduced a law to make abortion a homicide (though it’s unexpected to pass).

My sister lost a late term pregnancy in Idaho a decade ago. It was so traumatic. I assume (though don’t know) that she needed abortive medications to help deliver her stillborn baby (whose heart had stopped). I can’t imagine going through that and then being investigated for possible homicide.

Not PP but another person against the death penalty. Of course he should be in prison for the rest of his life. Brutally murdering two people in cold blood? Yeah, not safe in society.

I am a Christian, and killing people in retribution is antithetical to the teachings of Jesus.

If the state is going to murder people the firing squad actually is the most humane. Highly accurate and no suffering. Lethal injection can seem more clinical but it goes wrong too often.

PP here. Actually, I'm a Christian who is opposed to the death penalty, too; but I'm disgusted by the early release of murderers or shorter sentences than life. It happens too often.

I find it really interesting that they always report what the person had as a last meal (and that the last meal was the choice of the person being executed).

Is that a last gasp at compassion? I mean it's weird. Why is this always reported?

It seems a number of the injections recently have had problems, didn’t work as expected, took too long, etc.

Firing squad is much quicker.

I listened to a really interesting podcast that discussed why firing squad is actually the most humane method of execution. I wish I could remember the name of it. It changed the way I thought about it.

Speaking as someone who had a family member murdered, if it would bring back my brother, fine, but. It doesn't. Life in prison without the possibility of parole is a far worse punishment.

I agree, but too many liberal attorneys and judges won't be okay with it.
