Our kid and friends ordered a bunch off Amazon and the school said nothing. They had one for I attended a Taylor Swift concert, I eat lunch off campus, I didn't get a good SAT score etc. They had fun with it.

It's pretty easy to get some kind of cord with minimal effort

Everyone got the opportunity to obtain a cord. Whether they did what was necessary to achieve is a personal choice.
