My kid is a D1 athlete and DH and I were both mediocre athletes in youth/high school sports and definitely could never have played in college. Yes, a lot of it is hereditary, but my kid is an amazing athlete, against the odds.

Truly doubt that

Why? Maybe they each had half of what it took to be an amazing athlete (e.g. one parent had incredible hand-eye coordination and general athleticism but their dedication and mental game sucked, the other was super dedicated and had tons of grit but couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn) and their genes combined just right for their kid?

Too early to say & I wouldn’t be thinking about this right now.

She is likely too short unless you expect her to grow a lot more (have height in the family). My DD grew another 2-3 inches after 8th grade, and was a very late bloomer (first period a week after her 15th birthday). Most girls are done or close to done growing in 8th grade.

Of course there will be exceptions on the height. True for all sports. But they are the exception.

It's WAY too soon to know.

You said her goal/hope is to make the high school team? That's a good goal. Is she on a good club team?

Clubs are usually way more knowledgeable than schools about recruiting. Assuming she has a good club coach, he/she may be helpful in letting you know whether she has any chance. Encourage her to keep her grades as high as possible. And pursue the colleges she wants academically. College websites have recruiting questionnaires -- she can fill them out to get in their system. I don't know the dates that volleyball coaches can talk to kids, but stay on top of stuff like that.

MIT is an unlikely admit for practically anyone, so I don't think I'd put my eggs in that basket.

Thanks for the responses. I really was asking b/c was wondering if was *supposed* to do be doing anything, and am very glad to know that the answer to that question is no. We are in North Texas, and vball here is VERY competitive, and so wanted to do a reality check with the rest of the country. She wants to be on the school team (and we want her to be able to play recreationally in college or at local leagues when she's an adult). That for us is plenty.

General Average:
The average height for a college volleyball player is around 5'10".
Position-Specific Averages:
Middle Blockers: 6'0" - 6'4"+
Outside Hitters: 5'11" - 6'2"
Rightside Hitters: 5'11" - 6'2"+
Setters: 5'9" - 6'1"+
Libero/Defensive Specialist: 5'5" - 6'0"
Division-Specific Averages:
Division 1: Average height of 6'0"
Division 2: Average height of 5'10"
NAIA: Average height of 5'10

not true- my DD grew from 5'8" in 8th grade to 6'0 over the summer/first part of 9th grade.

But, for the love of God I wish people on this site knew how to comprehend basic words.

“ Most but not all 8th grade girls are done growing.”

Do you understand what “most but not all means”? Of course you don’t, because if you did you wouldn’t have responded with “not true”.

This type of asinine stupidity is mind-boggling.

NP- wish there was a way condescending, a$holes could filter themselves. But here we are. I'm sorry you feel like you need to be so freaking mean for absolutley no reason.

Northwestern is D1 bubba. Your kid is too short and there is 2.1 percent chance that your daughter if she even makes the high school team will play college volleyball

Just picking some random Ivy League rosters, ...

https://brownbears.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster
https://cornellbigred.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster
https://gocolumbialions.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster

You might find "only" four to six current players under 6-foot on each. Cornell might be the outlier of these three teams with two first-year players under 5-10.

One of Maryland’s setters was 5’3”. D1, Big 10. There are short setter/DS’s. Not a lot, but why already rule her out because of height?
