The Department of Education did not exist until Carter created it. i think it was 1980.
I taught before and after the Department of Education was formed.
Title I pre-dates the Department of Education and it will exist after it goes away. Many public laws regarding special education, learning disabilities, etc. pre-date the Department of Education. I was teaching when many of those were enacted.
I don't think people realize what a mess the Dept of Education has been. Student loans existed prior to the Dept of Education. They have always been an issue, but it became much worse under this department.
It is just a bureaucracy peeling off $$ that would be better spent at the local level where the instruction happens.

Any idea if the plan is to return the funding to the states via block grants, or will they simply leave states to choose between closing schools or raising taxes? And… is there anything stopping a state from simply abolishing public education altogether?
Think about it differently.
States have to balance budgets generally. Thus, they spend on things (like education) from funds raised from taxes.
The federal government does not balance a budget. So it can borrow and then send money to the states so they can spend that on things like education.
If the federal budget cuts spending on education, there is nothing to return to the states, since the money was borrowed.
The federal government could send money as block grants for items it really wants. I expect this. We will see funding tied to specific policies they want implemented.

Aren't schools already run by states? What do you think pays for your local public schools, DOE? Your RE taxes and more.

Teacher here, who is home sick today. There is no plans for us to call in sick over this. Stop fear mongering. We had meetings at school and they said it won’t affect the budget as much as people think.
I, personally, am in favor of charter options. Public schools have done downhill in VA in the past ten years and no I am not a troll. I am a real teacher and a parent and yes, my kid has an IEP.
You obviously do not know what you are talking about. On average it provides $2,400 per student and most of the special programs.

Those are the teachers who need to find a different field. Good riddance.
Children deserve an education, not radical indoctrination.
