They didn't love freedom for everyone, just freedom for themselves. They are more then willing to toss the whole game board because there was too much "freedom."

When Shah of Iran was toppled and mullahs took over, they cancelled colleges and universities for 4 years so that there could be no planned gatherings among young people, colleges and universities are where a lot of young people get involved in social issues, this is a page from the typical authoritarian rulebook. We have lived this nightmare and are acutely aware of all the steps taken to move towards authoritarianism.
