Why didn't your kid call the police? This is driving 101 and you failed in teaching this

Get some repair estimates and track the kid down and tell them insurance and the police won’t be involved if they pay cash to you. Otherwise you need to involve the police and insurance.

Newsflash, the police won't come unless someone is injured, so even calling the police wouldn't get you anywhere. Your kid did the right thing, call your insurance company and let them handle this - it's what you pay them for

I can't believe everyone says to put this through insurance. It's $800. The amount that insurance will end up covering after deductible (if any) is so negligible, and then you have this on your insurance for 5 years. For what? To get insurance to reimburse you $300? Stupid. Just consider $800 the cost of having a kid on the road. Or just let the scratch stay. Sounds like you bought your kids a car, and this is a pretty good life lesson for a kid about how expensive life is and sometimes there are financial tradeoffs. Mom doesn't feel the need to get a scratch buffed out for $800, the other side won't pay. So if kid wants to gin up $800 of their own money, they can. But otherwise they can do as the 95% do, and life with a non-noticeable scratch on their car.

I was rear ended by 2 guys who I'm 99.9% sure were not here legally. I live in a border state so this is fairly typical. They did not licenses nor did they speak a word of English. The car was barely driveable. The car, however, was insured. We never had a clear understanding of who the owner was (someone who spoke Spanish stopped to help) but the car was insured and I took down the information. I filed a claim and they sent me a check for repairs.

I could have called the cops but it would have taken hours for them to get there and I knew these guys were not going to stick around.

File the claim.

Holy assumption Batman. Doesn't matter if you think they can afford it or not. They have insurance. File a claim. Insurance company will pay for repairs. End of story.

In a case, like this, either you deal with it on the spot or you move on imo. My dd caused minimal damage to someone's car, she stayed on scene, and the owner said not to bother which was very kind. I've done the same too because my car is not new For a scratch with no dent, depending on how bad and if you own the car outright, you can find a perfect match for the paint online by looking for make model and year and fix yourself (btdt).

Our insurance doesn’t raise rates until a second incident. Call insurance or don’t, get it fixed or don’t, but you sound like you just want to whine about it.

File a police report now. It’s not too late.
