Another plus for Helen Hoang. Casey McQuiston. Both are very good writers.

Follet is a good writer, but the sex in these books is rarely consensual. So caution if that's not your thing.

Oh my smut-loving friends, how has Sherry Thomas not come up on this thread?? She writes really, really well for the genre. She's my go-to for porny-lit that isn't cringe and isn't assault.

She does historical fiction, centered on women who don't fit their assigned societal roles. Lots of London-season marriage mart settings, with young women who'd really rather be on an archeological dig than standing around a ballroom. And then of course, graphic sex with the archeology-loving son of a duke or something.

However, she has a whole series of Sherlock Holmes knockoff stuff that isn't as good, so for the good smutty stuff I'd recommend in particular:

His At Night
The Luckiest Lady in London
A trilogy that includes Tempting the Bride, Ravishing the Heiress (I know), and Beguiling the Beauty.

I went into a rabbit hole on Amazon unlimited (which I no longer support) for a series of sexy greek gods in the modern world hookups. Not everyone's cup of tea. Fantasy plus romance. They were really good and didn't hurt my brain with bad writing. That's all I ask-- I want the story and to not be distracted with terrible writing.

I'm the one who reads nothing but romance.

Here are a few more I've really liked. Kate Canterbary, Walsh series; Lainey Davis, Stone Creek University and many others (SCU was particularly spicy) I agree with the poster upthread who recommended Vivian Arend. It has been awhile since I read her but she is good.

I enjoyed Kylie Scott, I forgot the name of the series but they feature a rock band.

If you like romantic suspense, I highly recommend Pamela Clare's I-team series.

Carly Phillips is fun and hot but on the fluffier side.

Leaning towards the kinkier/dirtier end of the spectrum Mari Carr and Jayne Rylon and Olivia Cunning Backstage Pass series. What I mean by kinkier/dirtier is that there are 3-somes and BDSM in these books. Lorelei James and Lauren Dane have that in their books too.

You can judge me all you want, I've always liked romance and now that I'm in menopause and my drive fell off a cliff, sometimes a few pages before bed will get my motor running enough to make my hasband happy.

What makes the books I'm recommending different from straight up Penthouse Letter is that there is character development and a plot beyond the sex. These authors all have series that are connected so you see characters from prior books as a part of the overall world building/plot.

I am not a historical, fantasy, sci-fi reader so if that is your jam, I am not the person to come to. I listen to a podcast called Fated Mates that is all about romance. One of the hosts is Sarah MacLean who writes excellent, spicy historicals. (from what I've heard)

Historicals always seem to have to more witty writing and social observations to go with the smut. Contemporary authors seem to be in such a rush to get to those scenes that plot, dialogue, and world building take a backseat.

Brill Harper and Sarina Bowen are other authors that write high-heat contemporaries.

A book that had a surprising amount of smut was The Fourth Wing, which has become a publishing phenomenon, I think in part for the surprise of the sex.

Haha - love outlander (Jamie!!) and am reading onyx storm (book 3 of fourth wing series. Clan of the cave bear series is an oldie but goodie!

"Romantic Comedy" by Curtis Sittenfeld was hotter than expected (and really well written)

Also "More: Memoir of an Open Marriage" was smutty
