Went to London this Christmas and a co-worker gave me his leftover British currency from his trip - he hadn't used any of the money he exchanged.
I was sure I would put it to use, but everything is credit there - even the street stalls. I used some as a generous tip to a good guide then donated the rest to whatever charity was accepting leftover cash during the flight back.

You can go to a bank in the UK and they will change it for you. You just can’t use it in stores

I was in London in December and had some old notes to exchange. Took them to a currency exchange in central
London and they exchanged them 1-1.

You can go to a bank in the UK and they will change it for you. You just can’t use it in stores

Thanks for the tips, and thank you VERY much to pp with the warning about pre-2017 currency. Had no idea that was a thing, and we were planning to ask family if they had any leftover currency.
We have the credit card/phone payment thing covered, and yes, we anticipate that will take care of most things. Very specifically, kid collects those commemorative coins from tourist spots and in France and Sicily we found that some were only available through machines that required 1-euro or 2-euro coins, and want to be sure they have 1-pound or 2-pound coins available if that happens in England.
