How old is the child?

You mention that you are frustrated to be paying this much, and not to have a clear path forward. I can absolutely understand feeling that way.

At the same time, it's not realistic to have a clear path forward for a younger athlete, regardless of what you pay. So, your choices are likely to be accept that you won't get it, find a less expensive teacher that you think is worth it without getting a path forward, or not doing individual coaching.

If your kid is 16 and you are hoping he'll be recruited, then yes, you should be getting specific guidance on their path.

I’m a little confused by the post. Is your kid not getting any feedback during a private lessson or are you the parent not getting feedback?

The goal of a private one on one lesson is for them to work specifically with your child and improve their skills. If that’s not happening, it’s definitely time to find a different coach.

We’ve done private lessons for several sports at several ages for several kids. Not all private lessons are equal at all.

Your child should definitely be getting feedback all through the lesson and should be given things to work on.

I agree a lot of the personal training is not worth it. A lot of these coaches are just looking for ways to supplement their income and, given how little they are paid, I don’t blame them. We’ve been lucky enough to find a group training option where the coaches care about the kids and are genuinely focused on helping them improve. I think it helps that this is their full time job.

Kids do need more reps to get better, but I also think that the training arms race is out of control and continues to be fueled by delusional parents with deep pockets. At some point parents need to assess whether spending 15k/year (or whatever it is) on training truly makes sense for their kid given their potential and personal goals.

That would not be acceptable for us. I’d find a different instructor.

My son takes lessons for a similar price/time and the instructor does sometimes quickly break to return a phone call or text. However: for these lessons, a water break or two is needed anyway. And he makes it quick.
