Winchester is a cute revolutionary war town and they have a pretty good children’s museum.
George Washington's Headquarters is across the street from the children's museum and is low-cost and tiny, which is nice for kids' attention spans.

Museum of the Shenandoah Valley - museum itself might not be super interesting to kids, but their gardens are very nice and often have special exhibits.

Dinosaur Land isn't too far out of the way and neither is the drive-in theater.
