People, it's not about ATC. Read the thread in the original link. There are many more support staff required for safe flying besides ATC. They apparent are firing a ton?

If they are in an area with ATC. Lots of private pilots take off from unattended airports. Also, enforcement of private pilot training, especially those not carrying revenue passengers, is almost non existent.
I would never ever ever fly general aviation or helicopters and have no fears flying commercial. Your risk assessment is way off base here.
