I know him (family member) but I don’t regularly use DCUM so I may not see all of his posts.

It’s my father. He has told me repeatedly that he didn’t want me to be born.

I only maintain distant contact for the benefit of my mother. I try to keep the visits to about 2 hours twice a month. I keep the phone calls to a minimum as well. I do this for her benefit. I have no other siblings so I get the brunt of my father’s mental illness. He has advancing cognitive decline and frequently forgets my age, when he last saw me, what is going on in the world right now, etc. Sad.

I have advised my mother to cut off his internet access but she hasn’t.

I am op, and I am NOT your father.

Please don’t blame him!

It’s a real question, but not a scenario I’m dealing with.

Say what now hon?

Do you live in a trailer park, OP?

Give Riley and Jaxxyn another chance.

He grew up on a military base. Married into a wealthy family and now feels entitled.

I think I know who this is.

Don’t worry. We aren’t coming for more than a couple of hours on Saturday.

I can’t wait to turn off the financial spigot to my free-spending child when he graduates from college.

How can your child free spend? That sounds like your fault.

So many here tell parents to cut off their kids, and I really believe that they have received lip and still not cut their own kids off.

Honestly, we are in the midst of doing something like this (regarding paying for college). Our daughter has been terrible and verbally abusive. She won't even apologize for her behavior. So unfortunately, we are considering this option.

I take exception to the term, OP.

And you're wrong. On DCUM, most posters advise adults to distance themselves from their parents/relatives who have abusive tendencies. I had to cut off contact with my mother for 6 months so she could reflect on years of hyper control and constant criticism on every aspect of my life, including my weight. The trigger was when she told us our toddler daughter was too fat (she was normal weight). My mother saw the light and has been a lot more circumspect since.

Parents cutting off their children should only happen when their mentally ill child does not respond to any treatment and has become violent and abusive, and said parents need to protect themselves and any other children in the family.

No parents and kids would ever be in communication if you cut them off for giving you “lip”.

That’s what kids do.

I can’t imagine ever cutting off a kid. BUT, we have always been very, very clear with our expectations but also very understanding. They feel the love!!!

Nope. My young adult/college DD has been nasty on a couple family vacations, I let her know if she couldn’t be pleasant we’d choose to vacation without her. But beyond that, no.
