State parks are usually so much less crowded because all the big tour buses and quick trip photo taking tourists don't bother.

This seriously is a shame.

I hate it because of the terrible policymaking aspect, but I also hate it because I am planning a family reunion in Maine on Mt. Desert Island, and Acadia is the best thing on that island. I hope they can even keep the place open.

This breaks my heart.

You'd think our national parks are the one thing Americans could agree on funding.

I don't agree. We are expats so have seen all of Europe, as well as much of the Middle East and Asia, and our BEST family vacation, according to my ds and British dh, has been Death Valley national park. We stayed at the Oasis at Death Valley, camped a few nights, and had an amazing time. The amazing night skies, the beautiful, desolate scenery, the dunes, and the creepily empty Armargosa Opera House is something my ds still talks about a decade later. Dh and I are talking about going back to the US this summer just to visit Death Valley again, with some family friends from Germany who are dying to see it as well.

I guess we're uncultured hicks.

The responsible thing would be to not go right now.

I agree and I’ve been to 54 of the national parks. While the hotels inside the parks are not cheap, a lot of people camp - which is very cheap.

I think you’re incorrect. I’ve done a lot of national park vacations (have been to over half of them) and they really do pull from a wide swath of domestic and international visitors. This is one of the actions that shows me there is no method to the madness. The people making the decision (Musk) dog have sufficient knowledge about what actually makes money for America and what the Trump voters actually support/like. They don’t know what they are doing and are too arrogant to take the time to educate themselves.

Listened to an interview about Cape Cod National Seashore and how the job cuts and budget impact will likely limit its ability to open beaches. That would crush the local economy.
